Chandrayan Vrat, is something which is very much praised in Sanatana Dharma.
There are many kinds of vrat in Sanatana Dharma.
The most popular ones include the Shivratri Vrat, Pradosh Vrat, Purnima Vrat, Ekadashi Vrat, Dwadashi Vrat, Gayatri Vrat and the most powerful of them, Chandrayan Vrat.
The way Lord Rudra is greatest among all Gods and Lord Shakti is greatest among all Goddesses, the way Sun is supreme among all planets and moon is supreme among all stars, the way water is supreme among all panch tatva, the same way, the vrat of Chandrayan is supreme among all.
By performing this what is there in this world, and that world, that cannot be achieved.
1) Vrat
2) Japa
3) Chandrayan anna aahaar
4) Daan
5) Sandhya
6) Arghya arpan
7) Puja
8)Pranayam
9) Gayatri Devi Upasana
These are the 7 parts of Chandrayan Vrat.
The person who performs Chandrayan Vrat for 1 month, the sadhak gets rid of all the sins done in lacs and lacs of births.
He liberates himself, his 21 ancestors and his 21 descendants already.
The sadhak's body becomes equal to burning fire in terms of tej and impression.
The sadhak roams around on earth without fear, the way Lord Rudra roams around the world without fear.
There is no defeat, no sorrow, no sadness, no pain, no weakness, no disease, no adharma for the person who does Chandrayan Vrat.
His face glows like fire and his lifespan increases in multiples of hundreds and thousands.
There is no tapa greater, than the tapa of vrat for a grihasth.
This vrat is done by extremely spiritually powerful yogis and sadhaks because it is of their level of greatness.
There is no tapa, greater than this tapa and there is no purifier greater than that of Chandrayan Vrat .
The person who performs this vrat of 1 month continuously 12 times I.e. for 1 year, achieved moksha.
By performing this vrat, even those, who have done sins like betrayal of those who surrendered on to him, stealing of gold, done par-stri gaman are purified.
By performing this vrat, even those who have married someone from other caste, men who have married woman of upper caste, brahmins who have had sexual relations with shudra, and even the extremely extremely lowly class of people, who eat dog meat or have accidentally come in contact with dog urine are purified by the immense power of this vrat.
Other than this, the person who has done khandan of purushcharya, one who hasn't done daan, one who has insulted or talked in a prideful way with elders, brahmins and Gods must perform this vrat to ve purified from these sins.
Those who had, in the past, abandoned dharma, must perform this vrat of 1 month to be purified from the same.
Method of performing vrat:
1) You must get an idol of Lord Chandra and Goddess Rohini beforehand. Then, you must get it pran pratishthit. Other than this, you must also have a Gayatri Yantra with you.
2) the vrat must be started from start from purnima and must end on next purnima.
This is called as 1 Chandrayan Vrat.
It can be started done only from purnima to purnima..
3) first of all, on the first day of fast, you must do panch devta pujan and then do pujan of Maa Gayatri, Lord Chandra & Maa Rohini and do their puja using shodashopchar.
4) Then, he must take sankalp and mention his wishes for doing this vrat.
Keep in mind readers that even though this vrat is very powerful it is not worth if you are doing this vrat to fulfill some bhautik wish. Even though it can, this is not what the Chandrayan vrat is meant for.
This extremely powerful but extremely tough vrat is meant for purification from heinous sins.
5) In this vrat, the sadhak is doing upasana of Lord Chandra along with Maa Gayatri.
Upasna of chandra is done as per his 16 kala, which decrease/increase in the krishna&shukla paksha respectively.
One thing you must understand that only havishya ann must be eaten. And nothing else. Not even fruits.
Thus, the food that he takes will also be according to decrease/increase of Lord Chandra's kala.
Thus, on the first purnima, the sadhak must eat 15 morsels of food.
Then, on krishna paksha pratipada, the sadhak must eat 14 morsels of food.
On krishna dwityaa, 13 morsels.
This way, every day, the sadhak must decrease the amount of morsels he is going to eat.
This way, on krishna chaturdashi, he must eat 1 morsel of food.
On amavasya, he must stay nirahar.
Then, from shukla paksha pratipada, he must eat 1 morsel and then increase the morsel for each day.
This, on shukla pratipada, eat 1 morsel.
On shukla dwitiya, eat 2 morsels, and so on.
This is the vidhi of eating food.
The food that you eat must be havishya ann.
In my articles on how to perform purushcharan sadhanas, I have shared what havishya ann is. One can refer to the same.
Also, there are many days in a vedic year where there is an increase or decrease in period of tithi. The morsels must also be adjusted accordingly.
The size of the morsels is also predetermined.
The morsel must be of the size of a chicken egg, a peacock egg or a big sized amla. Not more than that.
The above mentioned method of eating morsels was for adults and capable ones.
Those who cannot do this, must follow any of the below mentioned 2 types of Chandrayan:
1) Yati Chandrayan - In this, the sadhak must eat 4 morsels of food in the morning and 4 in the evening.
2) Shishu Chandrayan - in this, the sadhak must eat 8 morsels in afternoon daily.
In these 2 kinds of Chandrayan, there is no need to increase/decrease the morsels.
6. While eating the food, the morsels must be energised by the following mantras and then only eaten. For each day, depending upon the number of morsels, the mantras must be used for each morsel. Hence, you must energise accordingly.
Firstly, the sadhak must use gayatri mantra and then, the below mentioned mantras.
On the first day, since the sadhak will be eating 15 morsels, all the 15 mantras mentioned below will be used.
On krishna pratipada, the sadhak will be eating 14 morsels, hence, he must utilise only the first 14 mantras. Then the same for 3rd,4th,5th days.
Thus, this way, on the krishna chaturdashi, the sadhak will utilise only the first mantra as he will be eating only 1 morsel.
The 16th mantra must chanted on all morsels on all days.
Again, keep in mind that gayatri mantra and 16th mantra will constant.
For example, on krishna panchami, the sadhak would be eating 10 morsels.
Thus, he will energise each morsel with:
A)gayatri mantra
B) the first 14 mantra from the above mentioned mantras.
C) 16th mantra.
For those who are performing yati Chandrayan &shishu Chandrayan must also follow the same rule accordingly.
Every day, the sadhak must eat food only after giving arghya to Lord Chandra & performing sandhya.
During the vrat days, the sadhak must follow bhumi shayyan, sandhya, daan, dharmik kaarya properly.
The sadhak must chant 3 mala of gayatri mantra daily and he must chant mantras of Lord Chandra also.
Other than what I've mentioned above, one must also do the usual bhojan sanskar that we do using 'ॐ प्राणाय स्वाहा, ॐ अपानाय स्वाहा,etc.'
The same can be learnt from a brahman dev.
The sadhak must bath 3 times a day. He must maintain utmost cleanliness and hygiene.
The sadhak must do path of vedas during the vrat days yathashakti.
Other than this, things like being truthful, fair, calm, peaceful, being pride-less, must be followed.
At the end of the vrat, the sadhak must do gayatri havan of 1100 aahuti and feed atleast 3 brahmins and give daan to them.
Shastra says that one must donate 1 cow for each Chandrayan vrat that is done.
But if you are not capable to do that, you can simply donate something else to the brahmins.
I believe that the best donation one can give is the donation of food. Also, keep in mind that anna-daan is incomplete without giving water, hence, the same must also be donated.
No other donation is greater than the donation of food.
As for donating cow, one can instead donate some money for the well being and development of a gaushala.
Other than this, those who want can also donate gayatri yantras, silver, gems, etc. as per one's capacity.
