How to energise a Mala

Energising mala, yantra, idol, aasan are the necessities of any purushcharan sadhana. Without which, doing sadhana is like trying to pull a mountain using little fingers.
Today, I will share the method of energising a mala or a rosary. This method can be used for all gods and goddesses and in all aachaar.

Materials required - Kush aasan, 9 peepal leaves, the mala which needs to be energised, cow dung powder, raw cow milk, gaumutra, ghee, curd, chandan powder, agar powder, kapoor, kumkum, guggul dhoop, red flowers in case of shakti mala or surya mala, yellow or white flowers in case of all others & gangajal.

Method of energising:
1. On an auspicious muhurat, The sadhak must have a bath in the morning and perform his sandhya.
2. After performing sandhya, one must go to his puja room.
3. Wearing red/yellow/white clothes, one must sit facing east on a kush aasan.
4. Then, establish a chowki in front or you and spread a red/yellow/cloth on it.
5. Then, keep a steel plate on it.
6. Now, the sadhak must do achaman, pranayam, etc. And then light diya and incense sticks. The diya must be of ghee irrespective of what school you are in.
7. Then, the sadhak must use 8 peepal leaves and spread them on the plate in such a way that they look like lotus from top. The simple way to do it is that the stem part must be kept in the middle while the leaf is facing outwards.
8. Then, the 9th leaf must be kept in the middle.
9. Then the mala must be kept on this ashtdal.
While spreading the peepal leaves and keeping the mala, one must chant the following mantra  in nasal tone -
।। ॐ). Mool mantra means the mantra for which you are energising this mala. In case you are energising mala for the daily puja, you must chant the basic mantra of the god/goddess.
For example, for Lord Vishnu it will be -

10. Then, using panchgavya, one must purify the mala. Panchgavya is the combination of cow milk, urine, curd, ghee and cow dung powder. The same must be made beforehand.
The sadhak must use a spoon and offer panchgavya to each of the beads.
The mala must be kept in the right hand and the panchgavya must be offered using left hand. The sadhak must make sure that each of the beads is touched with the panchgavya.
While offering panchgavya, the following Sadyojaat mantra must be chanted for each bead -

Then, using Vamadev mantra, chandan, agar, and kapoor must be applied to each of the beads -

Then, using the Aghor mantra, one must offer dhoop to the mala -

Then, using Rudra Gayatri mantra, one must offer chandan again -

Then, the mala must be washed with clean water. While offering water, you must say the mool mantra  and - शुद्धोदक जलं समर्पयामि ।

Then, this mala must be picked up and put in a gomukhi and sadhak must do 1 mala japa of the following mantra on it -

After this, the mala must be removed from the gomukhi and kept in a separate new plate.

After this pran pratistha of the mala will be done.

Pran pratistha viniyog -

Then, one must take a kush in his hand, touch its tip on the sumeru of the mala and chant the following mantras in nasal tone. While chanting the mantra, one must imagine as if the mala is getting energised and divine energy is entering it.

Pran pratistha mantra -

After saying ॐ प्रतिष्ठ,  you must repeat the mool mantra 21 times. Mool mantra refers to the mantra whose purushcharan sadhana you are going to perform.
In case you are doing this mala sanskar for daily puja, you must repeat that God's gayatri mantra 21 times.
This too must be done by touching kush tip on the sumeru.
While chanting the mool mantra, you must imagine as if that mantra's energy is entering the mala.

Then, one must pray to the Isht deva and to mala devi to give you siddhi in mantra chanting.

After this, there are 3 different steps which need to be followed depending upon the school you are following:
1) For Shakti -
First, using any kalam or any tiny wooden stick and rakt chandan or kumkum+gorochan as the ink, you must write Shakti Pranav - ।
Then,
Take a red flower in your right hand and the mala in your left hand. But hold the mala only using  thumb, middle and ring finger. Using the red flower, apply kumkum on each of each of the beads while repeating the following mantra -
।। Hreem Maale maale mahamaale sarva tatva swarupini ।
। chaturvargas-tvayi   nyastas-tasmaan-me siddhidaa bhava ।।

This will complete the energisation for shakti mala.

2) For vedic and vaishnav schools -
Using a yellow flower, apply gopi chandan on the mala. Chant the following mantra while applying gopi chandan -
Then, take the mala in your right hand and cover it using your left hand.
After that,  one must chant the mool mantra in anulom vilom method by giving the samput of  Matruka mantras.
The mantras are the same as mentioned in point 9.

This completes energisation for vaishnav upasaks.

3) Shaiva -
Shaiva must chant 1-1 mala of these 2 mantras -

This completes the mala energisation procedure for all schools.
Those who follow gaanpatya school must do energisation as per Vaishnav or Shaiva school depending upon the satvik/tantrik form of upasana.

Surya upasak must do as per Vaishnav schools.
All others must do as per Shaiv school.

After completion of the mala pran pratistha, one must perform a simple  havan of ghee  by offering 108 aahuti of mool mantra in it.
At the end of the havan, whatever ghee is left out I.e. not offered to the havan, must be poured on the  mala.
This completes the mala energisation procedure.
Even though the havan is very small and simple, In case, someone cannot do that, he must do 2 mala jala of the mool mantra.

Once the mala is energised, one needs to handle it with utmost care.
By causing unnecessary sounds from the mala, the sadhak gets diseases.
If, by careless use or by excessive straining of the mala, it breaks, then the sadhak gets the sin of Brahma hatya, since the mala has god in it.

Various tantras have various things to say regarding this.
Some tantras say that the person who breaks the mala faces death.
Some other tantras say that one gets the sin of Brahma Hatya.
While some tantras say that in case the mala is broken, one must get it re-sewn by a kumari girl and the mool mantra must be chanted 108 times. That is it.

However, it has been observed by me that most of the times, the sadhak faces destruction of intelligence and dullness of the mind.
The sadhak also faces mrityu tulya dukh in life.

Hence, one must stay careful and treat malas with care and respect.
Gods reside in the mala.

Also, many times, we read that some mala is called Mrityunjay Mala or kuber mala, or Mrit Sanjeevani Mala; all this is nothing but pran pratistha of the  mala with that mantra, regarding which I have mentioned some paragraphs above.
Instead of spending hundreds and thousands on these Mrityunjay malas and kuber malas, one can make the same at almost 10% of that price by following the method I have mentioned above

  1. sir, this procedure involves chanting the mantra in which we are going to get siddhi. But when the same mala is used for any other gods sadhana we have to again perform the procedure according to the new deity? Because the energisation procedure appears different for shakti and shiv. For eg: i energised a rudraksha mala for shiv sadhana and after that i need to do a shakti upasana or a yakshini sadhana with the same mala. Then what should i do?

    1. In case you energise mala for a purushcharya, you cannot use that mala for any other purpose than purushcharan mantra.

  2. sir, i have 2 doubts
1)only the aksharmala needed to be pronounced nasally or is it same with pranapratishta mantra also?
    2) Can you please elaborate on how is nasal pronunciation done.

    1. 1) both
      2) in sanskrit, normally the letters ह्रीं, आं,etc. Are pronounced as hreem, aam, etc. In nasal tone, the pronunciation will be hreen, aan, etc. Through help of nose.

  3. So after puruscharana we have to abandon the energised mala in a river. But Sir, puruscharana, mantra prayog and sadhana are different. And is it that the rule of using a mala only once applies only for puruscharana and not for prayogs and sadhanas.

  4. Sir in satyojaat mantra the word given is bhajasva. Isn't it supposed to be bhavasya?

  5. Sir, When doing puruscharan,we need to dispose the mala after the use and is not supposed to be reused again. But what is the case when it comes to Mantra prayogs that we do for wish fulfillments? I have some doubts regarding this:
1)Can it be reused (if we do another prayogs of same deity).
2)Is it energised with the particular Deities gaytri mantra or the mantra involved in the mantra prayog?
I asked this as you once told puruscharan and mantra prayogs differ.

    1. 1. For mantra prayog, the mala can be reused if using for one god.
      2. It is upto you. In Some mantra prayog, it is necessary to throw away the mala in river.
You must by default keep a mala which is energised by that respective devta's gayatri mantra.
Then, depending upon the guidelines of the prayog, you must use your wisdom and decide what to do.
